Call for Applications to serve as Board Directors of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND) 

 

The OAND is issuing a call for applications from both OAND members and the public who are interested in sitting on the OAND Board of Directors for a voluntary three-year term starting in May 2023. 

There is currently a particular need for Directors with skills and knowledge in the areas of non-profit governance, strategic planning, policy development, and fiscal management, but all applications will be considered.  

 

PROCESS FOR APPLICATIONS  

 Those interested in serving as an OAND Board Director are asked to submit an online application comprised of a signed eligibility & application form, current CV, a statement of interest, and a conflict of interest declaration.

Your statement of interest should address the following questions.  We suggest you prepare your response prior to commencing the online application.  

  • What do you hope to contribute to the ongoing growth and development of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors, its Board of Directors, and the profession?  

  • What is your experience or understanding of Board governance and/or the role of the Board? 

  • What related skills and/or experience would you bring to the OAND Board of Directors? 

All applications will be held in strict confidence but shared with all Board Directors involved in the review process. The Board will review all applications, consider gaps in the current Board skill set using the Board matrix, and interview select and eligible applicants via telephone or video call.  Those selected for nomination to the Board will be considered at the next Annual Meeting of the members of the OAND.

ROLE OF THE OAND BOARD  

The Board’s role is to establish, re-evaluate and maintain a vision and associated strategic plan, develop relevant policies for the organization, and establish a clear direction for the Association’s operations, including programs and services offered to the membership. 

Being a Board Director provides you with an opportunity to: 

  • Meet and collaborate with naturopathic colleagues and public Directors 

  • Learn and develop new skills in governance and association management 

  • Demonstrate leadership skills  

  • Support and promote advocacy, government, and public relations 

 This is your chance to contribute to an organization championing the success of naturopathic doctors in Ontario at an exciting time for the profession. You will be challenged, supported by your colleagues and the OAND staff, and more than anything else, you will have a powerful opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to the growth and wellbeing of the naturopathic medical profession. 

 

DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Directors are collectively the representatives of the membership and are charged with the responsibility of exercising visionary leadership, establishing values and goals, setting policies and procedures, ensuring value in the programs and services to the benefit of the members, and supporting the employees and volunteers of the Association while respecting them as partners in advancing the mission of the OAND. 

The Directors shall: 

  • Attend and actively participate in all the work of the Board including meetings, committee work, strategic planning, governance training, and the Annual Meeting; 

  • Be a strong ambassador for the Association, promoting the programs, services and achievements to members, prospective members, the public and to other stakeholders 

  • Prioritize the needs of members and the resources required to achieve them; 

  • Adopt programs to carry out the mission and strategic goals; 

  • Monitor the execution of the policies of the Board, and the goals and programs of the Association; 

  • Be positive in communicating Board decisions to members, staff and the public; 

  • Review, understand, and comply with the by-laws, policies, and procedures of the Association and ensure compliance by others; 

  • Understand the governance structure and related responsibilities of the Board and staff; 

  • Identify and understand emerging issues and opportunities for the profession which are compatible with the Associations goals. 

 

TIME COMMITMENTS 

Directors are expected to commit the equivalent of approximately one-day/month.  There are Board meetings monthly (except July, August, and December), typically held virtually, in the evenings (currently the last Tuesday of every month), and are two hours long. There is also a planning retreat and governance training, both held annually. Directors are expected to contribute to at least one Board committee. Committee meetings are occasional and typically held at times selected by committee members.
