It is with great pleasure that the OAND welcomes back former Manager of Clinical Education and Pulse Editor Anna-Liza Badaloo to moderate this pivotal training and panel at OANDCon24. Anna-Liza Badaloo (she/her) is an organizational justice consultant, un-learner, and inclusive storyteller working at the intersection of health, environment, and social justice. She is the Founder of Anemochory Consulting, and her lived experience as a queer, Indo-Caribbean, neurodiverse woman brings a valuable intersectional perspective to her work. She amplifies diverse voices via her Natural Health Equity column for the Institute for Natural Medicine, educates about environmental justice for organizations like the Women’s Healthy Environments Network (WHEN), the ENRICH Project, and the Canadian Coalition of Environmental and Climate Justice (CCECJ), and helps environmental non-profits decolonize their organizations with the Sustainability Network.
Mental health conditions are on the rise. As a profession, we need to learn how to support patients’ mental health with a compassionate approach – first to ourselves and then to our patients. You can only guide a patient as far as you have been guided yourself. It is imperative that we as healers, ensure that we have embodied a key principle in medicine: Physician, Heal thyself. There is a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating that social and physical environments that threaten human development (ie trauma) can lead to short-term physiologic and psychological adjustments that are necessary for immediate survival, but which may come at a significant cost to long-term health outcomes, learning, behaviour and longevity. As a consequence virtually everything that is “wrong with your patients” began as a survival mechanism in childhood. In this talk, learn how to go beyond the diagnosis to understand the underlying dysfunctional patterns that can form in childhood which become compensation mechanisms in adulthood. By examining core beliefs, limiting beliefs and unveiling shadow beliefs we can get to the root causes of our suffering.
Discover how our emotional well-being and our social connectivity are intimately intertwined with health. Chronic illnesses may not be separate and distinct diseases but multilayered processes that reflect compensations to the environmental influences we are exposed to. As human beings, we are not simply physical entities. We have minds, that result in the thoughts we think. We have emotions, that result in what we feel and we translate these feelings into meaning. Ultimately, we are spiritual beings. As a profession we acknowledge the spiritual aspect of healing but we don’t give a common language to express it. Learn the language of spirit by understanding compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and the role of love in medicine.
Clinical Takeaways:
- Understand the role of attachment, attunement and authenticity in trauma.
- Learn how to guide your patients through mindfulness practices in present-moment awareness
- Understand how to navigate emotional triggers and reactivity
- Identify how to differentiate between the voice of the mind and the whispers of the heart
- Discover what unconscious commitments are holding your patients back in implementing the changes you are asking them to make

PCOS is a multifaceted and chronic condition. With the healthcare system hyper-focused on BMI and patients feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information online, NDs play a unique role in helping patients navigate their PCOS compassionately and holistically.
This discussion will take you through PCOS basics as well as the nuances that facilitate shared decision-making with our patients. Special consideration will be given to comorbidities, the role of (epi)genetics and developmental experiences to help patients understand that they didn’t “cause their PCOS”, physical manifestations that affect patients in the context of a world that is constantly telling us to shrink ourselves, and supporting patients in their self-advocacy efforts. We’ll also cover naturopathic strategies as well as common conventional treatment options. Last but not least, together, we’ll support each other in sharing language we (can) use in our practices to help ourselves and patients move through long-term and dynamic conditions like PCOS.
Clinical Takeaways:
- PCOS basics: diagnosis, testing, prevalence, demographics, comorbidities, knowledge gaps
- How to think and talk about PCOS beyond the BMI, considering patriarchal and capitalist beauty standards and their impacts on a population with a high prevalence of acne, hirsutism, pattern hair loss, body dysmorphia, and disordered eating
- How long without a period is too long and what options for inducing a bleed to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia
- Clinical discussions on how to work with patients from diverse backgrounds including diagnostic considerations and considering ethical and cultural sensitivity.
- Supporting PCOS patients (beyond short-term interventions) using supplements, hormones, nutrition, topicals, exercise, advocacy tools, inter-professional collaboration, and education

Session Description
Integrative medicine combines conventional medical treatments with evidence-based complementary therapies to address the physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences on health. Further, patients come to integrative practitioners with existing prescriptions, and we are seeing an increase in the off-label use of certain medications. This lecture provides an overview of the top prescription medications that we see our patients being prescribed, emphasizing the evidence behind their use, potential benefits, and prescribing considerations including side effects and contraindications. Therapeutics we will cover involve care in the areas of longevity, chronic inflammatory/autoimmune, cancer and metabolic health. We will also explore the medico-legal aspects of off-label prescribing and key components of collaborative care when managing patients who are working with other providers with these prescriptions. Finally, we will try to reconcile how prescription medications can fit within the philosophical framework of naturopathic medicine.
Clinical Takeaways
- Identify and manage common off-label uses of drugs in your patients
- Understand the benefits and risks associated with off-label prescriptions and their impact on patient health
- Enhance your skills in communicating the rationale for off-label use and setting realistic expectations with patients
