Session Description:
In this intensive, Dr. Carissa Doherty ND and Dr. Sonya Doherty ND will review the biochemistry of pediatric and adult mental health disorders. Chemical messengers to and from the brain can be neurotransmitter, immune modulating factors, hormones to name a few. These chemical messengers can be impacted by several key systems in the body. These systems are the mitochondria, the methylation, the microbiome and the IDO-1/Kynurenine pathway. In this intensive we will review the research, laboratory assessments and pharmaceutical and naturopathic intervention to diagnose, treat and manage mental health via these systems.
The participants of this lecture will become familiar with neurotransmitters involved in anxiety and depression. There are medications used to regulate mood that will be reviewed and along with herbs that are used in managing mood. The anatomy of the cells that primarily make serotonin will be reviewed. The methylation pathway will be discussed and its relationship to the production of neurotransmitters will be reviewed as well as the balance. Testing neurotransmitters in urine will be reviewed as well as the relationship with thyroid function will be reviewed. Participants will become comfortable with inflammation of various types influencing mood as well as the connection of the digestive system to mental status.

Session Description:
Pandemics invariably exhibit a number of waves of activity before resolving. The “final wave” includes both virally-related and non-viral consequences of infection that can continue to burden individual health profoundly. Studies reveal that up to 1 in 3 adults infected with COVID develop lasting symptoms, termed “long-haulers” syndrome. COVID long-haulers exhibit both typical post-viral symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, poor concentration and muscle pain, along with symptoms more specific to this virus, such as neuropathy, headaches and anxiety. In addition, individuals also face mental health challenges, including impaired sleep, depression and increased addictive behaviour. These latter conditions are often overlooked yet can be far more long-term damaging.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover the main etiological and genetic factors behind post-COVID long-haulers syndrome, why the symptoms are so varied and how to differentiate post-viral symptoms from the regular flu, allergy or infection.
- Learn who is most at risk of developing long-haulers syndrome by identifying the key genetic SNPs involved in response to COVID infection and why these SNPs increase inflammation, risk of the post-viral syndrome and the prolongation of symptoms.
- This lecture and the included illustrative case studies will allow you to effectively treat COVID long-haulers by managing individual SNP expression with natural supplementation, diet and lifestyle changes.

Session Description:
Disorders of gut-brain interactions (formerly known as functional GI conditions) affect around 40% of the population worldwide – and disproportionately more in women of child-bearing years, with high levels of symptoms affecting their day-to-day quality of life. And yet, the stigma around these conditions still exist. We need to be looking at this differently. Within conditions that are characterized by a combination of alterations in the mucosa & gut microbiota as well as motility changes, hypersensitivity & altered CNS processing it’s a lot to consider. But the critical abnormality is believed to be gut-brain communication, yet our treatments often simplify this concept at best and ignore it at worst. It goes well beyond stress and mental health. This lecture will examine our new understanding of DGBIs, what the gut-brain connection is and is not, risks associated with standard care and coordinated treatment plans to get you going next week!
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the hallmarks of disorders of the gut-brain connection – what they are and what they are not.
- List the risks associated with the standard of care.
- Describe treatment options available for common disorders of gut-brain interaction.

Session Description:
Patients regularly present to clinicians with chronic symptoms and diseases, often requiring more effective management. The syndromes are either idiopathic, or defined illness entities that may have an allergy component, and are multi-system. Dr. Gannage will discuss that many, in a manner not routinely recognised in clinical practice, have mast cell activation as a key process in their disease pathophysiology. He will explain the biology of the mast cell, its role in innate immunity, the chemical mediators it releases, how it is involved in inflammatory illness, and its contribution to many common chronic conditions that can benefit from an integrative functional medicine perspective. There will be emphasis on identifying mast cell triggers and nutraceutical/botanical support.

Dr. Gannage founded and is currently the Medical Director of Markham Integrative Medicine, where he has been emphasizing prevention and treatment of chronic disease through nutrition, detoxification, immune system modulation and reduction of oxidative stress since 1998. Dr. Gannage has a special focus in assisting children and families affected by developmental issues, including autism, using biomedical therapy. Dr. Gannage has been a member of the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS) for several years, and has been awarded MAPS Fellowship in recognition of his extensive training and knowledge in this field. Still, the majority of Dr. Gannage’s practice is for chronic illness and conditions among adults, for which he has both learned and developed specific protocols from a Functional Medicine perspective. In particular, Dr. Gannage has become known for his special interest in Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), mast cell instability, histamine intolerance, and the role of each in chronic disease. Dr. Gannage consults virtually with patients from around the world with these conditions, and has developed comprehensive educational programs on the management of mast cell instability and histamine intolerance for both patients and practitioners.
