Speaker Bio:

Brandy Kinnear, mom, wife, serial entrepreneur and business innovator, has been blazing trails on her own since she was 20. When she started having health issues, she found that the conventional medical system wasn’t providing the help she needed, and so began her search for someone that could help. It was no coincidence that she found herself the new Director of Operations for a trailblazing clinic doing Integrative medicine and successfully healing people with natural means everyday!

Brandy turned a failing clinic into a multi 7 figure clinic in less than 3 years and stayed on for nearly a decade until she branched out to help more doctors grow their business as a full-time business development consultant in the natural medicine industry. Becoming passionate about her healing journey and educating others about natural medicine, Brandy began a quest to help more people know about, and more doctors implement, Integrative/Functional/Naturopathic Medicine in their practices. Facing the sad reality everyday that most people don’t know what the cause of their illness is or how to heal, Brandy realized the only way to spread the message is to help the healers and exponentially grow awareness to the profession.

Brandy quickly saw a huge deficiency in the use of technology and digital marketing in her client’s practices as well as a disconnect between all the inspired learning at conferences across the globe and implementation into actual medical practice. She began to innovate the industry by starting two business focused solely on solving these two  issues with technology.

Proud founder of Your Ideal Patients (a marketing program for doctors as well as an online educational platform for physician-to-physician education), Brandy is a passionate believer in Naturopathic Medicine and has extensive experience with both patient experience and needs, physician experience and needs, and making those needs culminate into successful business.

Course Description:

Now that naturopathic doctors can delegate controlled acts to others, it opens up a wide range of practice possibilities to benefit patient care.  It also adds in another layer of risk for the naturopathic doctor to manage, as it is up to the ND to determine whether delegation is appropriate, and that anything they delegate, or accept delegation for, is done safely and documented appropriately.  It’s only natural that many NDs wonder where to begin.

Learning Objectives:

1) What NDs can and can’t delegate

2) The requirements for delegating and accepting delegation

3) How to build safety into delegation to protect your patients and your practice

4) How to minimize the risks associated with delegation

5) The essentials of delegation documentation

Course Description:

There are many things that NDs may be uncertain about in the world of professional regulation, but mandatory reports shouldn’t be one of them!  Did you know that there are certain conditions in which NDs must refer patients to other primary care providers?  Or when an ND or another health professional must be reported to their regulatory College? What about the 60+ types of communicable diseases that must be reported to Public Health?  Would you know what steps you need to take if you learned of sexual abuse of one of your patients tomorrow? Who would you need to report suspected child abuse to, and how soon? If you don’t already know the answers to these questions, then this webinar is for you!

Learning Objectives:

1) Mandatory reporting requirements of individual NDs, and NDs who own clinics

2) Communicable diseases that must be reported to Public Health

3) When NDs must refer patients to other healthcare providers, and how to make an effective referral

4) The types of critical lab results that require a mandatory referral

5) How to report sexual abuse, elder abuse, and child abuse, and what information to include in the report

6) How the treatment of a spouse or partner could be viewed as sexual abuse

Session Description: NDs have the unique opportunity to work with pharmacists to provide customized therapeutic solutions for their patients using compounding. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioner’s prescription and can include prescription medication as well as natural and non-prescription ingredients. With custom compounded prescriptions, strength, dosage form and flavour can be chosen to suit the patient’s needs. For example, lollipops, topical preparations and oral liquids can make medications more effective and easier to take. Ingredients can also be excluded from medications due to allergies or other sensitivities.

NDs who have met the Standard of Practice for prescribing may prescribe the drugs listed in Table 3 of the General Regulation of the Naturopathy Act, 2007 and drugs from the Prescription Drug List and NAPRA Schedule 1. NDs who have not met this Standard may not prescribe the drugs listed in Table 3, can still take advantage of compounded solutions, but are limited to using natural and non-prescription ingredients. Join us to discuss how to add various compounding options to naturopathic practice. Prescription, natural and non-prescription formulations relevant to NDs will be reviewed. Additional collaborative opportunities including de-prescribing, adapting prescriptions and pharmacogenetics will be briefly discussed.

Course Description: In this webinar, Dr. Robertson, ND will be discussing the most current research on the evaluation and treatment of women with subfertility and risk of miscarriage, to improve clinical outcomes and live birth rate. Evaluating subfertility and early pregnancy loss requires a unique approach given that multiple aspects of health can have a profound impact on the hormone balance required to achieve healthy pregnancy. Autoimmunity such as Hashimoto’s, Celiac and Endometriosis can significantly influence fertility, and require unique lab work and
assessment tools to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Metabolic disease such as PCOS, and hormone imbalances related to stress can also influence fertility and increase risk of miscarriage, and Dr. Robertson, ND will review the assessment techniques for these conditions, as well as clinical trials that improve birth rates using Naturopathic Medicine. Specific topics that will be addressed include: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, endometriosis, PCOS, luteal phase defect and low female sex hormones and functional anovulation related to stress. Each topic will be reviewed with respect to assessment, evidence-based treatment options, and expected outcomes based on the medical literature.

There is significant evidence that supporting patients with hormone therapy such as desiccated thyroid and progesterone can improve fertility and reduce risk of miscarriage in at risk women. This seminar will review ideal lab reference ranges, dosing strategies and expected outcomes in women treated with BHRT for fertility and Dr. Robertson, ND will review cases that will illustrate the utility of both thyroid and progesterone to achieve healthy pregnancy and illustrate the role of the prescribing Naturopathic Doctor in prenatal and obstetrical care.

Learning Objectives: The purpose of this seminar is to review the most current and applicable research on advanced assessment of infertility and early pregnancy loss, as well as exploring the evidence for treatment options including BHRT. By the end of the presentation the participants will have achieved the following learning objectives:
1) Understand the clinical assessment tools to evaluate women at risk for subfertility from low female hormones such as luteal phase defect, and low
thyroid.
2) Understand the application of laboratory tests to evaluate women at risk for subfertility and miscarriage.
3) Understand the current literature on the use of naturopathic care and hormone therapy for women with subfertility or who are at risk for miscarriage.
4) Understand how to develop a treatment plan that supports women with subfertility and low thyroid to improve pregnancy outcomes.
5) Understand the application of naturopathic medicine to support women undergoing assisted reproductive technology, including the use of BHRT as a support for women in conventional care.

Presenter Biography:

Course Description: Research suggests that “classic” Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a central pain processing disorder and does not appear to be a peripheral somatic disorder. Dr. Brady will emphasize the concept that “classic” FMS must be clinically differentiated from the various subsets of organic, functional, and musculoskeletal problems which can lead to an erroneous diagnosis of FMS. He will then discuss an integrated approach to treatment of FMS.

Rather than be viewed as one grandiose syndrome into which all patients with unexplained widespread pain and/or fatigue are lumped, Fibromyalgia (FMS) like symptoms should result in a comprehensive work-up to properly determine the underlying foundational elements of the patients complaints. Dr Brady will outline at least four distinct clinical subsets that exist which often lead to a true or erroneous diagnosis of FMS. All should be considered during the differential diagnosis of patients with widespread pain as the primary symptom. These four subsets are 1) “classic” FMS 2) Medical diseases which mimic FMS 3) Functional/metabolic disorders which mimic FMS and 4) Musculoskeletal disorders which mimic FMS.

Learning Objectives:

1) Analyze the concept of central pain processing and the consequences of dysfunction of descending inhibition.

2) Assess the difference between regionalized somatic pain and true central allodynia.

3) Understand the neurological mechanisms and stress response and neurotransmitter aberrations that underpin fibromyalgia.

4) Attain confidence in understanding the myriad of organic, functional and somatic conditions that can result in a comprehensive symptom cluster that can commonly be mislabeled or misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia

5) Develop a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment approach to patients presenting with fibromylgia, as well as common fibromyalgia masqueraders.

Course Description:

We’ve long known the microbiota is involved with overall health – including digestion, vitamin production, immune and inflammatory modulation – but the strong role of our food affecting the microbiota has been missed in favour of the belief that food itself is the problem. We have focused on the issue of food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities. The diet seems to be narrowed for many patients rather than expanding – a detriment to our microbiota.

While these issues can exist, recent research has shown the need to investigate the bigger role of how our microbiota interacts with our diet and how, in turn, the bacterial metabolites produced affect our health. Microbial imbalances may lead to diseases and the symptoms related to conditions, in association with food, rather than the food itself being the problem.

Discussion in this presentation will include the role of different dietary components in the diet and how they interact with the microbiota, as well as the role and practical use of newer microbiota-focused therapeutic diets. The low FODMAP diet (functional gut disorders), IBD-AID program (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and Mediterranean diet will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

1) Understand the impact of the diet on the microbiota and how it influences health

2) Understand the research in non-absorbable carbohydrates, fibers, flavonoids and proteins in relation to the microbiota

3) Learn about 3 researched diets and their therapeutic effects in health:

4) FODMAP Diet

5) IBD-AID Diet

6) Mediterranean Diet

Course Description: It’s one thing to tap into a person’s problem, and a whole other thing to provide a viable solution. Angela simplifies the complicated and demonstrates how to successfully treat pain caused by trauma. Using her own life experience and 8 years of clinical experience working with chronic pain and trauma, she explains why we shouldn’t feel intimidated. “First, do no harm.” Trauma comes in many shapes and sizes. By recognizing and defining it, we avoid triggering patients and exacerbating their state. By not being afraid, we can come to understand trauma, and swiftly activate the body’s self-healing mechanism.”

Learning Objectives:

1) What are the different expressions of Pain: From patellofemoral syndrome to fibromyalgia. From IBS to PMS. Even interstitial cystitis. And of course the usual; headaches, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, tinnitus, vertigo, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
2) What is the Mind Body Syndrome (i.e. Body PTSD): Why pain lingers in some and not others
3) To understand, recognize, and define the different kinds of trauma
4) Learn how triggers are important obstacles to healing. Teach your patient to recognize and overcome them
5) Discover that trauma release doesn’t have to be a big deal. Demystifying trauma, building confidence around treating trauma-induced illness
6) Recognizing when the trauma’s just too big: when and how to refer
7) Learn to avoid burnout, learn essential self-care techniques

Presenter Biography:
Dr. Angela Hanlon, ND began her training early in life thanks to a series of injuries. But it was in her first year of naturopathic training that she was propelled into the field of pain. After failing an important exam she faced a career-sculpting challenge, know the musculoskeletal system intimately enough to get a 98% on the final exam. This gave her a solid foundation on which to build an acute understanding of movement and function.
During a course on myofascial release she discovered that every time someone practiced deep myofascial work on her she’d have a dramatic emotional reaction that was frightening and difficult to contain. Eventually fear gave way to curiosity and the rest is history. She found herself able to bring great relief to patients that came to her as a last resort. But she soon discovered that she could only help her patients get almost better. She also discovered that, months after the initial visit, patients were still quite reliant on her to prevent a return of symptoms. This didn’t sit well with her. Curiosity took over once more, and she started to read. Using her skills in coaching and health psychology, combined with a focus on the subtleties of body language, she began teaching her patients self-reliance. Angela continues to learn to navigate the world of trauma and chronic pain, and suspects that this will be a lifelong learning process.

Session Description: As Sanas Health Practice the main clinical focus is on cleansing and depuration protocols for achieving ultimate health. At times, rationalizing to patients the value of doing twice-yearly month long cleanses requires validation. Most depuration protocols and research focuses on heavy metal testing, and contaminant testing. To patients, this lab work doesn’t translate to how their bodies are working and serving them. What if regular lab work viewed in a functional way, could help patients truly understand the full benefit of regular depuration and could serve as a future inexpensive guidepost for all depuration protocols? We will discuss the labs that could potentially indicate toxicity within the system but that definitely indicate improving health, the rationale behind the therapies, common myths and the results of the trial critiqued. Mistakes in the research, areas for improvement, and where the focus should be for further trials will be included. The conclusions will outline how this will affect daily clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. – The best general lab tests that can be used as an indicator of increasing or reduced toxic stress on the system
  2. – Which protocols show the best evidence at this point for depuration and cleansing
  3. – What live blood cell microscopy shows after colon hydrotherapy
  4. – How NDs can modify cleansing depuration protocols to make them more effective, easy and efficient for patients

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Marisol Teijeiro, ND is a Naturopathic Doctor, graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and Medical Director of Sanas Health Practice. Session Description: Recent evidence-based research highlights the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease & functional bowel disorders, as well as the major role being played by the gastrointestinal system and its resident microbiome, in systemic inflammatory and auto-immune diseases – a rapidly rising health concern in Ontario. The discoveries of biomarkers that target these intestinal inflammatory and permeability changes now allow for a more evidence-based treatment of these problems by NDs.  This makes them not only relevant to clinical practice, but also allows the clinician to add a state of the art service, heretofore unavailable, thereby enhancing the client’s experience. These biomarkers are considered part of the list of ‘ELISA allergy tests’, and thus within scope of practice for Ontario NDs. This webinar will highlight the latest scientific evidence of physiological intestinal function, the pathogenesis of the disease state and provide an in-depth review of the fundamentals of clinical management. This will include the emerging link between gastrointestinal integrity and chronic disease, the importance of functional assessment and biomarkers, as well as the importance of the human microbiome.

Learning Objectives:

  • – Increase your knowledge of how the biomarkers for intestinal permeability, inflammation and antibody/antigen immune response can lead to more targeted treatment
  • – Learn relevant practical assessment, diagnosis, specific protocols & clinical recommendations

Course Description:

This emerging evidence, in the context of fertility, encourages a focus on supporting mitochondrial function and energy production to improve oocyte and spermatocyte quality and the likelihood of healthy conception and pregnancy.  A novel IVF procedure, AUGMENT IVF, is gaining popularity for its effectiveness in improving embryo quality and boosting IVF success by adding active mitochondria to the oocyte at the time of fertilization.  This procedure will be discussed alongside natural interventions to improve and preserve existing mitochondrial function.

Improvement of mitochondrial function will be addressed via a four-part strategy: provide essential nutrients, protect from oxidative damage, reduce exposure to damaging factors, and boost glutathione to enhance detoxification processes.  One of the most common nutrients for support of mitochondrial function, Coenzyme Q10, will be discussed for its physiological role in improving oocyte and spermatocyte quality as well as a comparison of ubiquinol versus ubiquinone forms.  L-carnitine, R-alpha lipoic acid, pyrroquinoline quinone, dietary and lifestyle factors, and other mitochondrial supplementation strategies will also be discussed.

This seminar is designed to provide theoretical research, practical applications and clinical pearls integrating nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, supplementation and IV therapies, with the goal of easily implementing these protocols into daily practice.  Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the role of mitochondrial function in fertility success, and suggested treatment protocols that enhance this function in male and female fertility patients.

Learning Objectives:

1) Understand the role of mitochondria in epigenetics, and the importance of this reciprocal relationship in the context of fertility.

2) Learn the benefits of supporting mitochondrial function in male and female fertility patients. Then, learn the importance of a pro-active approach to support mitochondrial function through diet, lifestyle and supplementation, as well as understand the novel IVF procedure, AUGMENT IVF.

3) Take home effective protocols and prescriptions combining nutrition, lifestyle changes, and neutraceutical supplementation to enhance mitochondrial function in oocyte and spermatocyte cells for male and female fertility patients.

Course Description:

The purpose of this webinar is to familiarize Naturopathic Doctors with the current and proposed regulatory process of natural health products (NHPs) in Canada so that they can make informed decisions about the use of supplements in clinical practice.

Do you know where to look for information on a particular medicinal ingredient or excipient, or how to find out if your “go-to” supplement is still available in Canada?

Since its inception in 2004, the Natural Health Product Directorate (now the Natural and Non-Prescription Product Directorate) of Health Canada has reviewed thousands of studies, collating the information into databases that are publicly available, making them an invaluable resource for Naturopathic Doctors in clinical practice.

Do you know how natural health products are regulated in Canada? Does it matter?

Health Canada is looking to modernize the regulation of natural health products by proposing a risk-based approach to Self-Care Products. To understand how that will impact the regulation of NHP and consumer confidence in NHPs in the Canadian marketplace, it’s important to first understand Health Canada’s current regulatory framework for Natural Health Products. And time is of the essence.  In 2016, Health Canada (HC) created a document entitled “Consulting Canadians On The Regulation Of Self-Care Products In Canada” for which it collected input from 3650 respondents, of which 73% were consumers and 17% were industry stakeholders. Too few Naturopathic Doctors participated in this discussion. HC has launched a new consultation on the refined proposal on the regulation of self-care products. In this current consultation period, which is coming to a close at the end of June, Health Canada is looking for comments from consumers and consumer associations; industry and industry associations; academia and regulators; Indigenous Canadians; and healthcare professionals, including Naturopathic Doctors. It’s important that we are part of the discussion.

Learning Objectives:

1) Understand and appreciate how natural health products are regulated in Canada.

2) Understand what criteria are used in pre-market evaluation to determine a product’s efficacy.

3) Understand what criteria are used in pre-market evaluation to determine a product’s safety and risk.

4) Understand what levels of evidence are required to support a natural health product’s claim.

5) Become familiar with publicly accessible databases and other helpful resources that can help clinicians make informed supplement recommendations as well as facilitate collaboration with other HCP and allied health professionals.

6) Become acquainted with Health Canada’s Self-Care Framework proposal to modernize Natural Health Product Regulation and take the opportunity to have their opinions heard by participating in the soon-to-close consultation on the refined proposal on the regulation of self-care products In Canada.
